A Garo indigenous girl gang raped in Dhaka

On 14 April 2014, the day of Pohela Boishakh (the first day of the Bengali calendar), a Garo indigenous girl (14) was allegedly gang raped by 3 rapists locally known as gangster at Shershah Road under Mohammadpur Police station in Dhaka. The Garo girl is originally from Sherpur district.

The rapists were identified as (1) Md. Alif Ahmed Nishan, son of late Md. Golam Hossain, permanent resident of Churain Barikhali of Srinagar in Munchiganj district, presently living at 59, Shershah Road in Dhaka; (2) Md. Sazu (24) and (3) Md. Ripon (22).

It is learnt that, on the day of Pohela Boishakh, the victim was returning home from the public fair with her relitive. When they reached at Shershah Road nearby Town Hall area, the culprits forcibly took them in a house and they tied up her relative and raped the girl one by one.

After the incident, the victim was sent to victim support center in Tejgaon police station and her medical test was completed. One rapist was caught by local people and then they handed over him to police while two perpetrators fled from the spot. Later

A student’s organization called Bagachas (Bangladesh Garo Chatra Sangathan) leaders demanded to immediate punishment of the rapists. In the meantime, the leaders of Garo Student Union formed a human chain in front of Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka demanding immediate arrest of the other two rapists. They also sought security for all the women of the indigenous communities. The victim herself filed a case with the police station accusing the three culprits.
