Attempt to rape of an indigenous santal girl in Rajshahi

On 10 April 2014, an indigenous Santal girl was attempted to rape by three Bengali labors named Md. Nayeem, Md. Saiful and Md. Rakib at a nearby cannel of Moholan Para village under Godagari upazila in Rajshahi district.

It is learnt that, the victim is a student of grade X, and used to go to school crossing a cannel regularly which was situated in between school and her village. The day of incident, at around 1.00 pm victim was returning home at Moholan Para from Kadma Junior High School after finishing her school alone. She saw three labors were working for the construction of a bridge over that cannel. They, the three perpetrators took this opportunity and suddenly they caught her and forcibly try to rape her. But the local people recued the victim while she was screaming loudly.

She informed her parents and the authority of school, when she returned her home. After that, the villagers informed the local administration about this incident and at around 7.00 pm, the perpetrators were arrested by Godagari police. The perpetrators were sent to mobile court by police. The mobile court verdicts those for 6 months jail in this connection.

The indigenous people were happy for taking a quick action against perpetrators with connection of this incident. They thanked the local administration and demand to keep up these types of action on violence against indigenous people. In this case ASUS, a local NGO acted an important role to ensure justice for the victim. The ASUS provided support to the victim’s family.
