Indigenous leaders urge govt to take effective measures to implement the CHT Accord and to protect human rights of IPs as per its commitment to the UPR

Indigenous leaders of Bangladesh Indigenous Peoples Forum (BIPF) and Kapaeeng Foundation (KF) urged the government to take effective measures to implement CHT Accord and to protect human rights of indigenous peoples as per its commitment in the second cycle of Universal Periodic Review of the UN Human Rights Council on Bangladesh held on 29 April 2013 in Geneva.

5th AGM of Kapaeeng Foundation held successfully in Dhaka

On 25-26 January 2013 the 5th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Kapaeeng Foundation (KF) took places at the CBCB Center in Dhaka. Total 50 participants attended this meeting and amongst them 30 members of KF organizational representative and 20 members from the Indigenous Peoples’ Human Rights Defenders Network, Bangladesh Indigenous Women’s Network and Indigenous Youth Network as observer.

Human rights violation against indigenous peoples alarming in 2012, says Kapaeeng Foundation report

Human rights violations against indigenous peoples, including reported cases of violence, land grabbing and dispossession, intensified alarmingly in 2012, says a Kapaeeng Foundation report. In 2012, 16 people including 7 women were reported to be killed and 23 were either arrested or detained throughout the year whereas around 150 were tortured or intimidated, and around 300 indigenous houses were demolished. At least 725 families have faced threat to eviction in connection to land grabbing. A total of 9 communal attacks were made on indigenous communities across the country.

BIWN & HWF organise human chain demanding justice for Kalpana Chakma in Dhaka

On 5 January 2012 at 11:00 am Bangladesh Indigenous Women’s Network (BIWN) and Hill Women’s Federation (HWF) organised human chain demanding justice for Kalpana Chakma in front of National Museum at Shahbag in Dhaka. BIWN and HWF rejected CID’s final report on the case of abduction of Kalpana Chakma and demanded independent, impartial and credible investigation into the abduction.

Civic groups organise solidarity and protest gathering against recent Ramu communal violence demanding “a non-communal and racial discrimination-free Bangladesh”

On 19 October 2012 at 3.00 pm, civic rights group organised citizen solidarity and protest gathering and cultural programme against recent communal and racial attack in Ramu and other areas of Cox’s Bazar. The demonstration was held by citizens group of all walks of life under the banner of “We want non-communal and racial discrimination-free Bangladesh” in front of the Swoparjito Swadhinota Chattar of Teacher-Student Centre in Dhaka University.

1st National Indigenous Women Conference held in Dhaka: Indigenous women form a network aiming at realising their rights through united movement

In the first ever National Indigenous Women Conference held in Dhaka, indigenous women leaders and representatives of indigenous women’s organisations formed a network naming Bangladesh Indigenous Women Network (BIWN) aiming at realising their rights through social, economic, political and cultural movements.

The two-day national conference was organised by Kapaeeng Foundation in cooperation with Oxfam at the CBCB centre in Dhaka on 31 March and 1 April 2012 with the slogan ‘Come forward to establish equal dignity and right of indigenous women and to ensure violence-free life for them’.
